Woodland landscapes – particularly those surrounding my riverside studio in Wiltshire – provide the starting point for recent work.
I begin with photographs and oil sketches, returning to the same view over a long period.
I then begin to make a collage of colours and details, rather like a two dimensional version of a “nature table”. My aim is to capture the total experience of a woodland walk, rather than just a visual record.
An important part of this process is for me to walk through the woodland and attend to the way that memory, dreams and enduring symbols often break into the presence of nature.
I work in oils, acrylic and oil pastels, on cold press paper, often mounted on canvas or board.
