Philip Leevers is an artist living at Bull Mill Arts in Wiltshire. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, school of painting, he has previously taught ceramics and history of art, but now devotes himself to art on a full-time basis.
Most recently, he draws inspiration from woodlands around the Deverill River in Wiltshire, where he lives, as well as coasts of Cornwall and the isle of Gozo.
After close study of the subject, he combines paint and collage, often including objects from the landscape – leaves, bark and lichen – and fragments of photographs. In this way, the tracery of a leaf can fool the eye into seeing a hill strewn with rocks, or foliage in a meadow.
The aim is to question the reassuring image we often have of nature: a painting can be enjoyed, but also puzzle and stimulate.
